Discourse Community Response
Ever since when we are born we are naturally persuaded to communicate with things. When we are babies we cry when we are hungry, sleepy, or just need a diaper change. When we grow up and finally learn to talk and communicate we are one of the most annoying species because nobody would keep our mouths shut. We are full of questions and we just want those answers coming. Finally, when we mature enough we come to a stage that now instead of talking we listen and in my point of view listening is fundamental for a good communication. Now I form part of various communities where communication is an essential part of them because my family, friends, teachers, and society in general form part of it too.
As a Family Member
My family and I are very close. Like most of Mexican families we are used to those carnes asadas (BBQs) which most of the time end up being full of enjoyable moments. In my house everyone speaks Spanish and it is very strange to hear English by the house. My family is my mom and three older sisters, all of them have cell phones, e-mails, and use social networks like facebook, yes even my mom does. Actually there is a lot of communication going on between us because my sister is getting married in a week so everyone is excited about that.
As a Musician
I have been playing drums for almost 6 years now and I am very passionate with music in general. Usually, some of my friends and me get together once a week for a jam session where we improvise most of the time and hardly write any music. When we jam we communicate with the music since we have been doing this for a long time we know when to make a change. Sometimes we stare at
us and wait for the right moment and make it but this is all body language. In general we just talk through facebook, text messages, or the old school phone calls which I prefer.
As a Miner
This is my first year in college actually I’m finishing my second week. I wasn’t expecting this at all but I think I’ll be able to manage through it. College is all about communication skills because that how you manage yourself through teachers, students, homework or just to meet new people. We also have this brilliant thing called blackboard where teachers upload the assignments, make forums, and post the notes that we take in class which I think it is very useful. Meeting with your teacher is fairly easy because they give us their office hours or their emails so we can meet up with them to ask any question or have the help we need. Meeting other students is very helpful too because we form a team where everyone has a message to shared and a good communication is required to obtain the essence of it.
As a Professional
My friends and I are organizing an event called Makala Art Festival where artist from El Paso, Juarez, and Las Cruces are going to present their art. For this event I was in charge for contacting some of the artist that are going to be showing their art so I had to email them or formally call them to tell them about the event. We also had to make an outline were we stated the objectives and the rules of the event too. I also met up with the insurance that is going to cover us for the event where we had to discuss some of the things that were going to be at the event. Communication took a big part on the making of this event.
All of these different communities describe me in different pieces that together form me. Communication describes us by the things we do with who we do them and for what reasons. There is no limit on where communication can take us because we still have more to learn about it. Generally
communication will make us a better guide and a better listener; it will make us a resource and a student. Communication is the key to succeed in life.
